Summer is nearly upon us and yes that can only mean one thing, a whole host of iPhone rumours will pick up pace from the inter-tubes. According to a plethora of trusted sources from around the net, a number of rumours have repeatedly emerged speculating on both the release dates and the model hardware from the Cupertino giant.
As most people will know, Apple will be hosting their annual WWDC from the 8-12 June and for those who really aren’t in the know, these conferences have been the centre stage for Steve Jobs and co. to launch products stashed deep away under development in Apple Labs.
Read on for the full details
So here are my predictions on this year’s most under-wraps fashion statement.

| iPhone 3G | 11th July 2008 |
| 3rd Gen iPhone | 17th July 2009 |

- iPhone to allow direct TV and Movie downloads to the phone [streaming TV possibly?]

- OLED Screen [thanks to LG]
- Discontinuing the metal strip that goes around the side of the iPhone
- Light up Apple logo on the back

- 3G will be upgraded to HSPA Fast Mobile Internet [either 3.5G or 3.75G but not 4G]
- Double RAM and Processing power of iPhone 3G
- Different Colours of the iPhone available
- 1.5x Battery Life
- Forward Facing camera mounted just above the screen [Video conferencing?]

- 3.2 Megapixel Camera [with possible 5 mega-pixel version later this year]
- Sleeker Design - Marginally Thinner?
- True GPS - Turn by Turn driving directions
- 4gb, 8gb, 16gb and a new 32gb Internal Memory version to be released
- Built in Compass
- A combination of Google Maps, the compass and GPS to identify locations through a photo
Marketing:
- Possible names to be iPhone Video, iPhone 4G, iPhone Pro, iPhone Nano
- Cut down Price with a Basic and a more expensive Advanced faster version
- There will be 6 editions of the iPhone to be released
Those are my predictions about what’ll be announced at the WWDC. Note that everything highlighted in blue has already been confirmed (due to developers currently testing it out Firmware 3 Beta 5 and announcements by Apple earlier this year) and those in Red are looking the most unlikely. What I’m perhaps most excited about are both those new design features mentioned - perhaps bringing an end to dropped iPhones? Also the OLED screen would be an incredible edition to the iPhone that would bring close to HD quality screens to a mobile device. The one thing that nearly kept me from switching my portable Mp3 players (iRiver Clix 2nd Gen) was the fact that OLED makes displays look truly awesome. It’ll be interesting to see what effect this expensive new technology being implemented in such a quantity does to both the market price of the iPhone and to other consumer products that might implement it in the future.
Interestingly enough, Apple’s potentially greatest competitor this year and one which holds the most promise of fulfilling the “iPhone-Killer” cliché will be that of the Palm Pre, due to be released 3 days prior to the WWDC. Whether this is a bold last ditch desperate attempt by Palm (and network Sprint in the US) at survival or a marketing master class remains to be seen. What’s sure is that there’s just under 3 weeks till show time.
UPDATE: I forgot to include an image that appears to be floating around the internet and has the key A330 model etched into the bottom (the next model number). Truth? or another fabrication from a Chinese Manufacturer? Certain seems to check all the boxes.
Update Update: Thanks Bill, and yes 32gb hard drive will definitely be in the next iPhone
Update Update Update: Here are a collection of some of the spy shots of the next Gen iPhone and what looks to be a very good guess by some designer.
