This year has been an amazing year and probably the best year ever for Nintendo’s Wii Platform.
I’ve been a fan boy for Nintendo for many years and since N64’s decision of sticking with cartridges, I initially thought the Wii gimmick would follow the same route of failure.
However over the years innovative and original titles have been developed for the Wii that have both shocked me and impressed me in many ways.
Who says technology needs to be up to date, despite the restrictions of the Wii, it still brings out amazing games!
Super Mario Galaxy
SNES gave you Mario Bros 3, N64 gave us Mario 64, Gamecube gave us …… Mario Sunshine (not in the same league), Wii the revolutionary (drum roll) …… Mario galaxy 2!!
You thought you were lucky when you got your copy of Mario Galaxy! This year you’re in for a treat, Mario Galaxy 2 is far superior to its predecessor.
Each planet has less stars meaning more variance making each planet/level even more exciting. I have been down on my knees and prayed for the geniuses that created this game. Just how can you improve a masterpiece? Well they’ve done it! Better in everyway bigger, more innovative, better paced, really smart puzzles and Yoshi!!!
Golden Eye
Who would have expected this! When Goldeneye was announced, I thought it was going to be a lacklustre effort remake/port of N64’s classic Goldeneye, much like the Perfect Dark’s effort on the 360.
From the guys who assisted in 2009’s sleeper hit “Dead Space Extraction”, this takes much of the success of Dead Space, the strong narrative and great storytelling and brings it into Goldeneye.
One note to add, this is completely different from N64’s Goldeneye, but an updated 21st century portrayal of the heart of the Goldeneye film (post 9-11, very Daniel Craigy).
The Narrative is amazing and perfect for a Bond game being very cinematic and dramatic (with some good character models) making you feel at the core that you’re an international spy for the M16.
The set pieces are well paced with a balance of action and stealth. Intense boss fights, bullet time, Daniel Craig, the list is endless. The different levels based in different countries keeps the game alive with epic scenarios. This is definitely a game for Bond fans or shooter fans.
Donkey Kong Country Returns
We’ve all been longing for a proper Donkey Kong Country game ever since the N64 and we’re not talking about bongo gimmicks.
You can imagine how much hype was built up as I’m a big fan, and guess what…
Remember the highly successful New Super Mario Bros. Wii back to old skool revamp? Well Retro Studios the geniuses behind the Metroid Prime trilogy, have developed a revelation of a game that is Donkey Kong Country Returns in terms of the polish and innovation, this is far superior to New Super Mario Bros.
Retro Studios is Nintendo’s new Rare. Not only have they captured the essence of the original but they have introduced new gameplay elements that make the game even more addictive and fun.
I can’t explain it, just grab a copy and play it… please.
Kirby’s Epic Yarn
Kirby’s latest edition, features some of the most original gameplay I’ve seen. The aesthetics is beautiful and reminds me of a big children’s storybook.
At first I was put off by the childish outlook, but don’t be scared you macho gamers reading this. This game is a lot of fun!
There are some nice puzzles and the whole Yarn direction, makes it an original and a altogether wholly new experience.
The soothing soundtrack and atmosphere is able to chill any stressed gamer… try this after a bout of Monster Hunter Trii.
Metroid Other M
If you’re into heavy narrative FMVs sequences and strong storylines (very Square-Enix oriented), then you’ve hit home run.
A fan of the classic Metroid games, this goes back to the roots yet includes the Wii controls in clever ways. Holding your Wii remote sideways like much of the revolutionary games this year, this becomes for our generation, like Metroid Fusion on the GBA.
Boss battles are a blast and the back to roots feeling brings back a lot of nostalgia. However some bits are not as impressive such as the scanning sections which can become tiresome.
But aside from some minor flaws, this is still a brilliant game.
