SteelSeries are one of the premier manufacturers of gaming related accessories out there on the market. Built on the award winning Siberia v1, SteelSeries have managed to improve on an already superb product. The Siberia v2 is a gaming headset with a retractable mic, two lengths of cable, an in-line mic swith and all of this at a very reasonable price.
Style
The Siberia v2 comes in a range of five different colors with the blue ones here for review and have been featured on a number of catwalks. The headband consists of two separate parts, to hold the cups together and to act as the length adjustment strap. While one minor criticism would be that the top band feels a little cheap, there’s clearly no lack of quality in the rest of the headset. It’s a very sleek design which for once actually adds to the comfort rather than become a hinderance as so many headsets have done so before.
Sound Quality
The Siberia v2 sound amazing. For this price point, they sound better than it’s nearest competitors and it’s a surprise that they aren’t over that £100 milestone. The bass is strong without being overbearing and the mids are clear and the highs are crisp. They suit any type of game whether it be the slow melancholic soundtrack of Civilization V or the thumping madness that is Bulletstorm. Safe to say that despite being aimed at the gamer market, the powerful 50mm drivers in each cup could very well be good enough to be your main audio headphones to listen to music through. The large drivers also incorporate some fairly standard but useful noise reduction in it’s foam lining.
Comfort
Surprisingly the headset is very light. We’re used to testing a lot of gaming headsets here at TUS and the one thing they nearly all have in common is just how heavy they are. Not with the Siberia v2′s however. They are insanely light which is a suprise considering how solid they feel and how good they also sound. The headband suspension that extends and retracts according to the size of your head is extremely light weight and even after hours of use, you almost forget that you’re even wearing anything on your head. The cups are particularly large which is great as it means they shouldn’t clamp down on you ear lobes and therefore encompass your entire ear for not only a more comfortable fit but a cleaner sound. The pads are made from a soft leather which is equally as comfortable
Extras
The retractable mic that’s included with the headset works well. There isn’t really a need to have stellar performance in a mic and most gaming headsets have fairly standard issue mics. The sound was clear on the other end and the adjustable cable for it was sturdy and has a nice aluminium finish. There’s also an added mic switch and volume control on the wire which is always helpful for those AFK moments and we liked that they provided a short and a long cable. I suspect one is primarily for use with a laptop where the distances aren’t too great and the other cable for desktops which may be further away. Fantastic attention to detail and one that’s very much appreciated.
Conclusion
The SteelSeries Siberia v2 is one of the best gaming headsets we’ve reviewed. It’s solid, sounds fantastic and is comfortable to wear. If you’re looking for a gaming headset for around this price range, then there’s no reason you shouldn’t pick up a Siberia v2 for yourself.
The SteelSeries Siberia v2 are available for £57 from OverClockers.
