With the price of SLR cameras falling ever closer to the level of digital point-and-shoots, it’s no wonder that more people are considering stepping up their photography to the next level. However if you’ve never used one before, the vast array of toggles, dials and buttons can be a daunting prospect to the budding photographer. Throw in terms like shutter speed, f-stops and ISOs and you can hardly blame someone for sticking with their compact digital.
CameraSim introduces an easy to use Flash-based SLR simulator so that new photographers can get to grips with what each setting on an SLR does. For example, what’s the difference between shutter and aperture priority or what effect does a high ISO have in low-light conditions. Even if you’ve been using an SLR for a while, it might be worth playing around with the site, you never know what new tricks you might pick up.
The site also has a page that helpfully explains some of the key elements of an SLR so you won’t be left randomly figuring out why the photo in the simulator has suddenly turned into a sea of white.
